BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–According to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, Cpl. Kimber Gist was discharged from Trident Hospital Friday afternoon.
“We are very grateful for all the messages, prayers and calls from all over the country wishing Kimber a speedy recovery,” read a statement on the department’s Facebook page. “Special thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff at Trident hospital who treated Kimber so well this week.”
Gist was shot a week ago after checking out a suspicious vehicle behind Food Lion on Red Bank Road. After detaining one of the individuals in the car, a second person, Travis Smith, began to fight Gist.
He then pulled a gun, shooting her eight times. She was wearing body armor. Her recovery has been nothing short of a miracle.
“I’m alive. I fought. I made it,” Gist posted on social media hours after the surgery.
Her shooter, Travis Smith, later committed suicide with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
A GoFundMe account has been established for the injured deputy. Family and friends are hoping to raise $10,000.
