GOOSE CREEK, S.C.–On March 5, 2016, at approximately 10:15 p.m., Major John Grainger says a GCPD officer was dispatched to the police station to meet with a complainant who stated her husband was suicidal.
Police say she then proceeded to tell officers that he claimed to have killed two people and buried them in their backyard while she was out of town.
Officers then traveled to their residence, 413 S. Pandora Dr., to investigate, Grainger added.
“The subsequent investigation revealed that two unidentified bodies had been buried in the backyard of the residence,” stated Grainger.
The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office was notified and responded to investigate.
“Evidence was developed sufficient to charge the complainant’s husband, James Edward Loftis, with two counts of murder. Loftis was taken into custody pending the service of warrants,” he added.
Grainger added that GCPD investigators are working with the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office to determine the identities of the two decedents. The motive for the murders remains a focus of the ongoing investigation, police said.
“We will provide the initial incident report and booking report as soon as they are prepared for release,” Grainger stated.
