GOOSE CREEK, S.C.–Goose Creek High School will host its first ever Gator Crawl, an individual and team relay competition, to honor the life and legacy of Sharonda Singleton, slain teacher and girls track coach.
“The Mother Emanuel tragedy hit the Berkeley County School District family extremely close to home as Sharonda was a teacher and girls track coach at Goose Creek High,” stated Aimée M. Murray, a spokesperson for the Berkeley County School District.
Singleton was one of nine people killed while attending bible study on June 17th, 2015 at the historic church in downtown Charleston, when police say Dylann Roof walked inside and eventually opened fire.
“Now the teachers and students are trying to honor her life and legacy by creating and promoting this event that’s sure to be fun and exciting, and that fulfills one of Singleton’s goals,” stated Murray.
The Gator Crawl will take place Saturday, April 23, 2016, at Goose Creek High School (1137 Redbank Road, Goose Creek). Sign-in will begin at 7:30 a.m. and the heats start at 8:30 a.m.
Gator Crawl is a fundraising event. Teams of five to eight people may participate for just $100, and individuals may participate for $20. All of the money collected will provide track equipment, scholarships and a memorial in Sharonda Singleton’s honor.
