ST. STEPHEN, S.C.–According to firefighters on scene, a St. Stephen police officer was conducting a routine traffic stop Thursday morning when the car sped away along Highway 52 in St. Stephen.
They say the car ended up crashing after hitting a curb and the tire blew.
“He hit the cement ditch,” said one of the firefighters on scene. “We landed life net on 52.”
The driver was airlifted to MUSC in downtown Charleston where he is said to currently be in ICU and listed in critical condition.
Several fire departments, including Pineville-Russellville, Macedonia and Bonneau, helped clear the scene.
A wrecker also removed the car from the crash site.
The Berkeley Observer has reached out the St. Stephen Police Department for additional information; however, has not heard back at this time.
This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
