BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office has arrested Robert Washington, 30, of Moncks Corner for the murder of 27-year-old Michael Vanwert of Moncks Corner.
Deputies say that on March 9th 2016 the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting on Harriet Tubman Lane in unincorporated Moncks Corner.
Witnesses reported that Washington had shot Vanwert, and taken his body. On March 11th 2016, Washington was apprehended, and Vanwert’s remains were discovered off of Black Tom Road in unincorporated Moncks Corner.
Additionally, Washington’s girlfriend Jessika Key, 26, of Moncks Corner, has been charged with accessory after the fact of murder. Both Washington and Key were denied bond on Saturday in front of a magistrate judge.
On Wednesday evening, the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting that occurred on the roadway, in the area of 110 and 112 Harriet Tubman Lane, in the unincorporated Moncks Corner area of Berkeley County.
Upon arrival deputies found an unattended Chevrolet sports utility vehicle stuck in a ditch, and blood in the roadway. Witnesses reported that a male known to frequent the area had shot Vanwert.
According to witnesses the perpetrator had placed the body of Vanwert in another vehicle, and fled the area. The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office placed a missing person alert out, hoping that Vanwert would be found alive.
Sheriff’s Office personnel including K9 deputies conducted several search efforts in the area of the incident, but were not able to find Vanwert. Sheriff’s Office detectives were able to determine the identity of the perpetrator, and on Friday March 11th, 2016,The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office apprehended Washington in the unincorporated Cross area of Berkeley County.
Through further investigation the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office learned that Vanwert had been killed, and was able to determine a general location where Vanwert’s body had been discarded.
After a brief search, Vanwert’s body was located down a closed forestry road off of Black Tom Road in
the unincorporated Moncks Corner area of Berkeley County. Washington has been charged with the murder of Vanwert.
Additionally, Washington’s girlfriend, Jessika Key, who deputies say had knowledge of the murder aided Washington in eluding the authorities, and has been charged with Accessory after the fact of Murder.
