MONCKS CORNER, S.C.–This Thursday at 10 a.m., the community is invited to come out to Moncks Corner Town Hall to remember Officer 26-year-old Marcus Stiles and 40-year-old Lonnie Wells–two brave policemen killed in the line of duty on March 25th, 2007.
Stiles and Wells were shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance call at approximately 4:00 pm that day.
According to authorities, a citizen had called police with the license number for a pickup truck belonging to a couple that was arguing at a laundry mat off of U.S. Highway 17A.
Officer Wells and Corporal Stiles arrived separately at the address on the truck’s registration.
The suspect, Gary Douglas, 51, was at the scene and opened fire, killing Officer Wells and critically wounding Corporal Stiles. Corporal Stiles was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his wounds the following day.
The suspect fled the scene in one of the patrol cars but was shot and killed a short time later by a deputy from the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.
Corporal Stiles had served with the Moncks Corner Police Department since August 2005.
Wells had served seven years in law enforcement.
