GOOSE CREEK, S.C.–April has been proclaimed Sexual Assault Awareness Month in the City of Goose Creek.

Goose Creek Mayor Michael Heitzler signed the proclamation, subtitled “No More Silence, No More Violence,” on April 4 at City Hall. He was joined by Shannon Nicholson of People Against Rape (PAR).

Established in 1974, PAR was the first rape crisis center created in South Carolina. For more than 40 years the group has helped survivors and their families in the tri-county area by providing confidential advocacy services.

The group encourages survivors and supporters to speak out against sexual assault at events throughout the month in the Lowcountry. Visit www.peopleagainstrape.org for more information.

“I encourage my fellow citizens to recognize the important role that People Against Rape plays in supporting victims and educating the public about sexual violence,” Mayor Heitzler said.
