GOOSE CREEK, S.C.–Goose Creek High School students recently received a close-up look at what happens in a courtroom.
Goose Creek High School teacher Amanda Cooper brought her Law Education students on a field trip to the Goose Creek Municipal Court on April 21.
The students met with Judge Shirley Johnson, who had just finished a morning court session. Judge Johnson talked about her job while answering a variety of questions, and allowed students to try on her robe and sit at the bench.
Students were given their “Faretta Warnings” and “Waiver of Rights” in writing, which are presented to defendants in court.
Clerk of Court Erica Fann talked about the importance of interacting with traffic officers respectfully. She reminded students that they are responsible for the vehicle they are driving regardless of who owns the vehicle.
The visitors were given an easily-accessible binder clip in which to store their registration, proof of current insurance, and driver’s
license in their car in case they are stopped.
Students were encouraged to be active in their community, to know their elected officials, and to vote. Most judges are nominated or appointed by elected officials, Judge Johnson said.
A city spokesperson says it welcomes field trip inquiries from area schools.
