BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division confirms they have charged Michael Colucci, the owner of Colucci’s Jewelers, with his wife’s murder. A warrant was issued for his arrest Tuesday.
According to an affidavit, on May 20, 2015, deputies with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office responded to 2206 North Main Street in Summerville in reference to an unresponsive female.
They say the victim, Sara Lynn Moore-Colucci, was located outside of a building, deceased from an apparent strangulation.
Agents say further investigation revealed that the couple arrived at this location together, and that there were no witnesses present.
Law enforcement officials say Colucci’s wife reportedly exited the vehicle and sometime later, he found the victim, purportedly hung with a garden hose.
On July 30, 2015, agents say Sheriff Duane Lewis requested an investigation by SLED.
Further investigation by agents revealed information from several witnesses that claim Colucci told them that his wife hung herself with a garden hose as he sat approximately 20 feet away, seated in his vehicle.
Medical evidence collected from the victim found that his wife was not strangled with the mentioned garden hose. Furthermore, agents say that evidence collected from the scene that night of the incident was reported contradicts Colucci’s version of events as relayed by witnesses and that the evidence indicates a fight or struggle ensued.
Colucci has been charged with murder. On Wednesday, Sheriff Lewis issued the following statement:
“Shortly after I was sworn in as Sheriff, the family of Sara Lynn Colucci came to see me regarding concerns they had about their daughter’s death. After hearing their concerns, I pulled the case file and reviewed it, looked at the incident report, the statements and the photos. Based upon what I saw, I felt that having SLED come in and investigate the case was the best approach to make sure that a thorough investigation was completed. I want to thank Chief Keel and his agents for their efforts on this very important case,” he said.
Colucci has been booked into the Berkeley County Detention Center in Moncks Corner.
