BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–On Monday night, Berkeley County Council passed a resolution that designates May 15th as ‘Peace Officers Memorial Day.’
“The members of the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office play an essential role in safeguarding the rights and freedoms of the citizens of our community,” the resolution reads. “It is important that all citizens know and understand the duties, responsibilities, hazards and sacrifices of their law enforcement officers and that law enforcement officers recognize their duties to serve the people of Berkeley County by protecting them against violence and disorder.”
On this designated day, all flags on Berkeley County buildings will be flown at half-staff to recognize ‘Peace Officers’ Memorial Day.’
County leaders say it is their way to memorialize those law enforcement officers, who through their courageous deeds, have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities or have become disabled in the performance of duty, and to honor
those law enforcement officers presently serving our communities.
In attendance at Monday’s county council meeting included Cpl. Kimber Gist who continues to recover from her injuries. She was surrounded by fellow deputies.
In February of this year, she was shot multiple times while investigating a suspicious vehicle located behind a grocery store in Goose Creek.
