GOOSE CREEK, S.C.–GCPD Traffic Unit investigators are seeking assistance with identifying a vehicle involved in an April hit-and-run case. Officers say a pedestrian walking her dog was struck and sustained very serious injuries. The suspect is still at large.
On the morning of Saturday, April 4th, 2016, at approximately 8:30 a.m., Rodile Bessamara, a 71-year-old resident in the Foxborough Subdivision, was walking her dog along Foxborough Road. Police say a dark colored vehicle traveling on Foxborough Road passed too closely to Bessamara, in turn, striking her left upper body with the vehicle’s passenger side mirror.
Police say the elderly woman was thrown to the ground and suffered a compound fracture to her right ankle. The vehicle never stopped; however, its passenger side mirror was found a short distance from where Bessamara lie injured.
The mirror was collected by GCPD Traffic Unit investigators and has since been identified as an aftermarket replacement. Police say they believe that the suspect’s vehicle had upgraded mirrors or had a replacement passenger side mirror due to prior damage.
According to the Goose Creek Police Department, officers have investigated 49 hit-and-run collisions this year to date; however, this is by far, they say, the most serious. At this point last year, GCPD had investigated 38 hit-and-run collisions. Two hit-and-run collisions last year involved fatalities.
At this time, police say Bessamara is at home recovering from her injuries. Her medical bills to date are in the tens of thousands of dollars.
