BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–According to Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury, shortly before 6 a.m. on Monday, 43-year-old Juan Vargas Martinez of Charlotte, N.C. was traveling east on I-26 near mile marker 187.
Salisbury stated that a dual wheel truck was traveling west and crossed the median and struck Martinez’s 2006 GMC Sierra pickup truck.
Martinez was pronounced dead on the scene.
“We were not able to determine if he was wearing a seat belt due to the damage to the truck,” stated Salisbury.
The death was ruled accidental by the coroner. It was investigated by the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
I-26 was eastbound was closed for several hour while the accident was investigated.
