HANAHAN, S.C.–Almost two years after it first opened as a Mexican restaurant-turned-nightclub, El Alamo has been forced to shuts its doors for good.
The owner, Benjamin Reyna, however, has 10 days to appeal Thursday’s decision by Hanahan City Council.
During a special hearing, Hanahan Police Chief Dennis Turner detailed 49 reports of public urination, drug possession, driving under the influence and assaults.
According to The Post and Courier, one of those assaults was made on a police officer just this month. Since opening, there have reportedly been more than 40 arrests made at the establishment.
Meanwhile, Reyna’s attorney, Chris Romeo, said the club has had only two or three citations for noise or fire code violations.
“You have a lawful business that’s operating, essentially, very lawfully,” he told the newspaper. “And then you have patrons who have obviously caused some problems.”
While Chief Turner stated that he doesn’t like to see a business shut down, he believes El Alamo, however, poses a threat to the community.
“There is a pattern of disorderly conduct, drugs and assaults,” he said.
Reyna was not present during the special hearing, and his attorney says he’s not sure if his client will appeal the city’s decision.
