BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–The gloomy weather accompanied by some rain did not stop Monday’s Memorial Day Service in Moncks Corner at the American Legion Hut.
Dozens of people from the community attended the special ceremony–including Bobby Helmly and John Gentry. These two heroes are reportedly the last surviving World War II Veterans of American Legion Post 126.
“We owe such a debt of gratitude to our Veterans,” stated S.C. Senator Larry Grooms who was also in attendance. “I am thankful that throughout our country, in places like Moncks Corner, people gather, pause, remember, and honor the memory of those who gave so much.”
The Berkeley High School Junior ROTC presented the colors and the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts served as ushers during the event.
Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America.
This day of remembrance stemmed from the Civil War and a desire to honor our dead. It was officially proclaimed on May 5th, 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11.
Since 1775, nearly 2 million people have paid the ultimate sacrifice, fighting for this country.
