BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.—On Thursday morning, Chief Deputy Mike Cochran confirmed that Sheriff Duane Lewis met with Elaine Barnett, a candidate for Berkeley County Council; Stephen Smith, a candidate for the S.C. House of Representatives; and Donald Bailey, a concerned citizen and resident of Berkeley County.
The meeting, Cochran stated, regarded allegations of possible ethics violations against Representative Samuel Rivers, member of the S.C. House of Representatives, Berkeley County Supervisor William Peagler, Deputy County Supervisor Tim Callanan and Berkeley County Councilman Ken Gunn.
Cochran stated that an initial incident report was generated to document the allegations.
Sheriff Lewis has contacted the State Law Enforcement Division and requested they investigate the allegations, Cochran added.
This case has been turned over to SLED for further investigation.
The move comes five days after Steven Smith, a candidate for S.C. House District 15, released text messages via social media allegedly from his opponent, Samuel Rivers Jr. to Elaine Barnett.
Smith accuses Rivers along with Tim Callanan, who serves at the chairman for Berkeley County’s republican party, of attempting to bribe Elaine Barnett with a job in Berkeley County in return for her dropping out of the Berkeley County Council District 3 Primary which takes place on June 14th.
Barnett is running against Ken Gunn.
