MONCKS CORNER, S.C.–American Red Cross disaster-trained volunteers say they are assisting a family whose home, located on Albrighton Way in Moncks Corner, was damaged by a fire Tuesday.

Moncks Corner, Whitesville, and Goose Creek Rural Fire Departments responded to the blaze.

The American Red Cross is meeting the immediate needs of two adults and three children by providing financial assistance for essentials, such as food, clothing and lodging, referrals to partner agencies, and comfort kits containing personal hygiene items.

The Red Cross is asking people to take two simple steps that can help save lives: check their existing smoke alarms and practice fire drills at home. Every household should develop a fire escape plan and practice it several times a year and at different times of the day. Install smoke alarms on every level of the home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas. Test them every month and replace the batteries when needed.

The American Red Cross, on average, responds to a home fire every four hours in South Carolina. Each year the Red Cross helps more than 7,000 individuals affected by home fires the because of the volunteers and financial assistance from the community.
