MONCKS CORNER, S.C. – Berkeley County Clerk of Court Mary Brown announced today that, since our world has become more vulnerable to acts of random violence, enhanced security measures at the Berkeley County Courthouse will be implemented immediately.
In a letter being sent to attorneys this week, Clerk Brown states that Berkeley County will be “implementing immediately the practice of screening all personnel which enter into the Courthouse.” Clerk Brown continues that these additional screenings will take place since “our world has become more vulnerable to acts of random violence.”
In her letter, Clerk Brown writes these additional screenings and security measures are to “not only protect the safety of the people and property within and around the courts, but also the integrity of the judicial process.”
Clerk Brown also recommends that lawyers, jurors and the general public should “allow themselves a few extra minutes in their schedules to accommodate the screening process.”
The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, who provides security at the courthouse, welcomes the request and has been working in conjunction with the Clerk of Court’s Office to ensure the best security practices have been devised and will be implemented.
