BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–According to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office a man wanted in connection with a recent deadly home invasion in Huger is no longer believed to have sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl early Wednesday morning.
Authorities now say Sherrod Deon Palmer is no longer considered a suspect.
“After examining the physical evidence and other factors relating to the reported sexual assault of a juvenile on July 27th by Sherrod Palmer, it has been determined that the victim fabricated the story. The juvenile who reported the sexual assault has been charged as a juvenile filing a false police report,” read a statement by the sheriff’s office.
During the investigation, authorities say detectives determined that the juvenile had fabricated the story as a way of explaining her not being home when she was supposed to be.
“Palmer is still wanted for murder and other charges relating to the home-invasion robbery from July 20th. Palmer should be considered armed and dangerous,” stated deputies.
According to deputies, they initially responded to a home a Steed Creek Road in Huger where they met with a young victim who stated that she had been taken from her home at gunpoint and sexually assaulted.
In the report, the victim told deputies that she was in her den at her house when when she could then hear a noise coming from outside.
The victim stated that she told deputies she then went onto the porch to check it out because she has a dog outside.
As she turned back around to go back inside the house, she saw a black man with a gun in his hand, according to the report.
The victim stated that the suspect told her not to say anything and to go inside her home and retrieve the car keys, the report stated.
According to the victim, the suspect then instructed the victim to go to the abandoned P&C Store at 4774 Highway 41 in Huger. That’s when the suspect told the victim to park near the wood line and move to the back seat.
The victim told deputies that she tried to fight the suspect off but was unable to do so. According to the report, that is when the suspect began to have sexual intercourse with her.
After raping her, the victim told deputies she went to her aunt’s house for help.
The victim identified the suspect as Sherrod Deon Palmer, one of five suspects charged in connection with last Thursday’s deadly home invasion that left 27-year-old Kadeem Johnson dead. A woman was also shot but is recovering from her injuries.
Again, authorities, however, say Palmer did not commit the sexual assault.
If you have any information on Palmer’s whereabouts, you’re still urged to contact the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office at 843-719-4412 or Crimestoppers at (843) 554-1111. Palmer is still wanted for last Thursday’s deadly home invasion.
