GOOSE CREEK, S.C.–The Goose Creek Police Department is asking the public for help in locating the suspect(s) involved in a weekend murder.
Early Sunday morning, officers say they responded to a shooting at 122 Westerfield Dr. in the Cherry Hill subdivision where a 19-year- old man was found dead.
“I observed several black males and females who appeared to be in their early twenties and late teens, hurriedly departing the area and getting into vehicles parked on Westerfield Drive and Worlingham Court,” read the incident report. “None of the individuals stopped for any of my hails to them.”
Officers say they initially responded to the scene for excessive vehicles parked on the road and in the area of the party.
Police say they found the young man lying down in the back yard with an apparent gunshot wound to the upper body.
Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury has identified the victim as Kyle David Shirlin of Charleston.
According to police, officers talked to a witness who told them that two black male with dreadlocks were trying to get Shirlin’s back pack but he shouted at them to leave him alone and that the police were coming.
“The two males apparently departed,” stated police in the report. “A description of the suspect was provided to all units.”
Police say the individuals who threw the party were in the process of shutting it down when the shooting took place and estimated that there were 75 to 80 people in attendance.
Shirlin reportedly worked as a valet at the Hyatt Hotel in Charleston.
A friend of the victim told police that Shirlin did not know anyone in the local area and learned of the party from his friend and fellow co-worker.
According to his Facebook page, Shirlin is originally from Hendersonville, North Carolina.
Investigators are working diligently to identify the person(s) responsible.
