BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Authorities have confirmed that the body found at the Cypress Gardens boat landing Wednesday morning has been identified as Donald Blair Sr., a Goose Creek High teacher accused of engaging in a sexual relationship with 15-year-old female student in late 2014 and early 2015.
Blair was arrested Monday and charged with sexual battery and criminal sexual conduct with a student 16 or 17 years of age. He was released from jail on a $20,000 bond on Tuesday.
According to Chief Mike Cochran with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, around 10:30 a.m. deputies were contacted by a member of the Berkeley County School District’s security team regarding assistance conducting a welfare check on Blair after he reportedly missed a scheduled appointment.
Berkeley County deputies searched areas that Blair was known to frequent and eventually located a vehicle matching the his vehicle description.
After conducting an area check of the woods near the Cypress Gardens Boat Landing, located on Cypress Gardens Road at Bushy Park Road, deputies stated that they located Blair who was deceased.
The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office was contacted, responded to the scene and assumed the investigation relating to the cause of the death.
No foul play is suspected, authorities stated.
Blair is believed to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
According to the Berkeley County School District, Blair had been place on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
