BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Several good Samaritans quickly jumped into action following a collision that left an SUV hanging over the College Park overpass Thursday night.
The accident occurred near mile marker 203 on I-26.
According to witnesses, a taxi ran a red light and hit a Ford Explorer, causing it to flip over. Several people, including Dyrl Burbage, witnessed the crash and rushed to help the people inside the SUV.
“I was able to get husband and wife out with the help of other people who ran to help,” he stated. “The husband was fine but his wife was trapped.”
Burbage stated gas was leaking from the couple’s vehicle after the crash. Although he says it scared him and the other people helping, it motivated them to work faster.
“When we finally got her out and everyone a safe distance away in case of a fire, I took a second to reflect on what just happened. That’s when I started smiling really big,” stated Burbage. “See the media wants to feed us racism cause it sells. Well, just now three white guys and four brown guys put themselves in harm’s way to save a married black couple. Maybe humanity isn’t lost.”
Not long after the incident, Burbage posted about the crash on social media.
“I just felt the need to post something positive in our overly negative world,” he stated.
His Facebook post has since been shared more than a thousand times in less than 24 hours.
“I’m glad that everyone made it okay,” wrote Chris Crankshaw in response to Burbage’s post. “It’s always nice to hear that people took action to help and didn’t stand by to record with their phones.”
“I think there is still some humanity our there its just everyone is so worried that they are going to get killed cause that’s what happens now a days!” posted Savannah Duvall. “It’s hard to do good for someone when in the back of your head you are thinking are they going to kill you or hurt you when your done helping them!”
While there’s been no word on the couple’s condition, Burbage says he’s just glad everyone made it out alive.
