BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–At Monday’s Berkeley County Republican Party meeting, Tim Callanan announced he will be stepping down as the party’s chairman.
His resignation goes into effect September 28th, 2016.
First Vice Chair Rep. Samuel Rivers Jr. will serve as acting chairman. While no official reason was given for Callanan’s resignation, Rivers told WCBD-TV that allegations of miscommunication and tension within the party were partly to blame.
“He got up and complained about some of the allegations that have been made against him in the past, challenged some of the committee members at that point,” Rivers told news reporter Raymond Owens. “He just basically said, ‘I am happy with myself. I’m happy with what I’ve done for the Republican Party, however as of September 28th I will tender my resignation.’”
According to the Berkeley County GOP, nominations and the election to replace Callanan will take place at the next meeting on October 17th at 7 p.m. at the Berkeley Electric Coop Building located at 2 Springhall Road in Goose Creek.
Local GOP officials have stated that anyone interested in the chairmanship is encouraged to attend the Berkeley Republican Breakfast to speak to the group on October 1st at 8:30 a.m. at the American Legion located at 116 Howe Hall Rd. in Goose Creek.
Callanan presently serves as the county’s deputy supervisor of finance. This was his second stint as the party’s chairman, taking over the reigns most recently from Josh Whitley who was elected to Berkeley County Council in February 2015.
