BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Authorities with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office say a man is now behind bars after killing his wife and then fleeing to Georgia.
Shortly after midnight on Wednesday, deputies say they responded to a report of a death at 223 Birmingham Drive in Sangaree.
When deputies arrived they say they discovered the body of a deceased female in the home. The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office has since identified the victim as 40-year-old Vanessa Hilton.
Deputies say it was initially Hilton’s daughter who located her mother in her bedroom. The coroner says Hilton died from blunt force trauma to the head and neck.
As detectives investigated the case, they say they determined that the homicide was a domestic-related incident.
According to deputies, the victim’s husband, 39-year-old Shon E. Hilton, eventually took the victim’s maroon Pontiac G6 Sedan and fled the scene.
Hilton was located hours later and arrested on federal property near Fort Stuart, Georgia.
“He is being held there on unrelated charges at this time,” stated Chief Deputy Mike Cochran. “Detectives from the Fort Stuart base police contacted the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office after investigating the origin of his vehicle.”
Cochran says Hilton will be charged for his wife’s murder.
“We are still investigating the particulars at this time,” he stated.
This is not the first time Hilton has had a run in with the law. Authorities say he was arrested by the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office on June 1st of 2016 for criminal sexual conduct with a minor, victim under age 16, second degree and indecent exposure. He was currently out on bond for those charges.
