BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Authorities say a driver attempting to flee the area before the storm ended up exchanging gunfire with Berkeley County deputies instead Thursday evening.
The officer-involved shooting took place along the 33-hundred block of Cypress Gardens Road in Moncks Corner around 5:30 p.m.
Officials say the driver attempted to strike Moncks Corner Police officers with his car after refusing to stop for them.
Berkeley County deputies eventually stepped in to assist those officers when the driver then reportedly attempted to ram his vehicle into them as well.
Gunfire was later exchanged near DuPont Industrial Park and the driver, who’s identity hasn’t been released, was shot.
He was transported to Trident Medical Center where his condition is unknown.
Four deputies have been placed on administrative leave as SLED investigates the incident.
It’s important to note that this is standard procedure anytime an officer is involved in a shooting–even if an officer’s actions are believed justified.
