BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Santee Cooper personnel say they are prepared for the anticipated effects that Hurricane Matthew may have on Santee Cooper’s service territory.
Officials say approximately 2 million South Carolinians depend on the state-owned electric and water utility as their power source, either directly or through the state’s electric cooperatives.
As of noon today, Santee Cooper went to a Condition 2 alert status. This means potential disaster-causing conditions are approximately 24 hours away and adverse effects to Santee Cooper’s service area appears likely.
“Santee Cooper will make every effort to keep electricity flowing to our 175,000 customers in Berkeley, Georgetown and Horry counties, and to our wholesale and industrial customers across the state,” said Mike Poston, vice president of retail operations. “Our equipment is lined up, our vehicles are ready, and we are finalizing details to be sure we can respond to outages as soon as we safely can.”
