BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–A Lowcountry man is fortunate to be alive after his boat took on water Sunday morning.

Around 9 a.m., the Berkeley County Rescue Squad was notified of an overturned boat on Lake Moultrie.

Bennie Bunch, 60, of Ladson was fishing in a bass tournament when his 21-foot-bass boat filled with water.

Chief Bill Salisbury stated that he was able to call 9-1-1 on his cell phone for help.

The Berkeley County Rescue Squad conducted a search of the lake and were assisted by DNR, Lake Moultrie Fire Dept. and Moncks Corner Rural Fire Dept.

Fortunately, Bunch was found shortly after 10 a.m. and was rescued.

“This could have been a tragic situation. His cell phone saved his life,” stated Chief Salisbury. “I don’t think he could have lasted much longer in the water. Hypothermia was already present.”

He was transported to a boat landing and his care was turned over to Berkeley County EMS.

He was transported to a local hospital and is in good condition, according to Salisbury.

Officials stated that Bunch was wearing a life jacket.
