BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Shortly after midnight on Tuesday, the Drug Enforcement Unit of the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant in the Summerville area of Berkeley County. They were also attempting to serve an arrest warrant for Charles Simmons Harris III for Distribution of Methamphetamine.

Additional warrants were obtained for Harris for Possession with Intent to Distribute Heroin and Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine.
During the course of the investigation information was obtained that Harris was operating a silver Volkswagen Jetta and that he may possibly be in the area of Royle Rd. Attempts were made by marked units to locate Harris with no success.
A while later, drug agents located the silver Volkswagen Jetta believed to be occupied by Harris in the area of Royle Rd. Drug agents attempted to stop the vehicle for an equipment violation and upon activation of blue light the silver Volkswagen failed to stop. The vehicle fled from agents on Highway 176 where marked Berkeley County Sheriff’s units waiting and assumed the attempts to stop the Jetta.
When deputies set up to deploy tire deflation devices, the Volkswagen took evasive moves near Crowfield Blvd. at Highway 176 and struck another vehicle that was occupied by a female. The female was transported to a local hospital for evaluation due to airbag deployment. The SCHP was called to investigate the crash.
The operator of the silver Volkswagen Jetta was apprehended and a subsequent positive identification was made of the driver, Charles Simmons Harris III, age 25 of McCrystal Circle in the Moncks Corner section of Berkeley County.

“Methamphetamine and Heroin are the two most dangerous drugs in the Lowcountry and they destroy lives every day, we see it all over Berkeley County and it is a shame. The dealers do not care for the lives that they destroy but I do and the Sheriff’s Office will continue to do everything that it can to identify and remove the drug dealers from our communities,” Sheriff Duane Lewis stated.
