BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–The Berkeley County School District’s (BCSD) Safety and Security team, in strong partnership with deputies from the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office and officials from Berkeley County Emergency Preparedness, conducted an Active Shooter Drill Thursday, November 17, at Sangaree Intermediate School.
BCSD Safety and Security Officer Tim Knight said the drill involved deputies, first responders, district and school staff.
“The deputies who responded and the staff who participated were not privy to all of the exact details,” said Tim Knight. “The intention of the drill is to replicate a real situation, coordinate with responding agencies and take all necessary measures to protect the lives of our students and our staff.”
These crisis exercises are conducted at least twice a year and allow local law enforcement, emergency personnel, district officials and school staff to practice collaborative responses and evaluate emergency plans.
The drills assist participating agencies in improving responses to potential threats in order to protect students, save lives, and reduce injuries.
“It is extremely important that we continue conducting these crisis drills together and ensure that our tactical responses to crisis in our schools is incomparable,” said Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis. “We appreciate the opportunity to continue partnering with the school district as the safety of our children is our priority.”
A second crisis drill has been planned for the spring semester, but the location of the drill has not yet been announced.
“I am proud of how quickly our school staff reacted to the simulated threat,” Knight said. “These drills are meant to empower our staff so that if they are ever confronted with a crisis, they know exactly what steps to take to protect the students in their care.”
