BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Berkeley County is “going green” in a major way. On Friday, the county’s largest solar farm officially began pumping out electricity.
The solar farm sits on a 4-acre former landfill site at the Charleston International Manufacturing Center at Bushy Park in Goose Creek.
Cooper River Partner invested $2.7 million dollars into the project. It is the the first economic development project in the county so far this year.
The solar farm can reportedly produce enough energy to power 160 homes.

The green energy power generated will be sent into the SCE&G power grid, and SCE&G will pay Cooper River Partners for the electricity. From there, the power is distributed throughout the Lowcountry.
According to Berkeley County Supervisor Bill Peagler, the solar will benefit taxpayers by increasing the value of the property, in turn, producing more revenue for the county.
CRP officials say they plan to build a second, similar-sized solar farm on the other end of their property. That farm will open later this year.
