BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office has earned reaccreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office was initially accredited in 2013.
By receiving reaccredited status from CALEA, an agency is recognized by its peers that it meets or exceeds the key benchmarks for the profession in over 400 different standards areas.
The CALEA accreditation process reviews 9 key areas as they relate to law enforcement and the community:
1. Role, responsibilities, and relationships
2. Organization, management, and administration
3. Personnel structure
4. Personnel process
5. Operations
6. Operation support
7. Traffic operations
8. Detainee and court-related activities
9. Auxiliary and technical services
“This process is not an easy one but I believe that participating in it is extremely beneficial to the both the community and to the Sheriff’s Office. The community trust that we have is further enhanced by the accreditation process and that is beneficial to us all,” Sheriff Lewis stated.
The accreditation process requires ongoing self-review and maintenance. The next accreditation review is due in 4 years as CALEA recently moved from a 3-year to a 4-year cycle for accredited agencies.
