MONCKS CORNER, S.C.—A Berkeley County firefighter is behind bars and accused of intentionally starting a fire Wednesday at Walgreens on North Highway 52 in Moncks Corner.
Agents with the S.C. Law Enforcement Division stated that Randy Wayne Cannon, 18, has been charged with arson—second degree, a felony which carries a penalty of three to 25 years if convicted.
“The fire was intentionally set by means of an open flame and available combustible materials inside a room,” read the affidavit.
After investigators watched surveillance video from inside the store, they stated that Cannon was seen entering the room which had to be opened with a key. He reportedly stayed in that room for several minutes before exiting.
“Upon leaving the room, the video surveillance showed that no one else entered the room between the time the defendant came out and the time patrons and employees are seen rapidly exiting the building approximately 4 minutes later,” the affidavit continued.
Luckily, Walgreens was able to return to normal business hours on Thursday. No word yet on how much damage was caused to the business.
The incident occurred less than a week after a suspicious fire at the Macedonia Church of God of Prophecy. Authorities believe that fire was intentionally set.
Cannon responded to that fire, according to Live 5 News.
The case was investigated by SLED and the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office. It’ll be prosecuted by the Ninth Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
In 2014, Cannon, then a junior firefighter with Macedonia Rural Fire Department, was expelled from Timberland High School after school officials stated he brought a box cutter to school.
