GOOSE CREEK, S.C.—Agents with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division have charged a Goose Creek man in connection with shots fired at a state trooper during a recent pursuit on Interstate 77 in Fairfield County.
Paul Anthony Walker, 20, has been charged with attempted murder, a felony when carries a 30-year-prison sentence if convicted. He’s also been charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
On February 10th around 9:40 p.m., authorities say Walker discharged a firearm at Cpl. Chris West with the South Carolina Highway Patrol while attempting to flee a robbery he and several other individuals had committed in Waxhaw, North Carolina.
After an alert was issued for the suspects’ car, authorities say West pursued a vehicle that matched the description.
As Cpl. West attempted to initiate a high-risk traffic stop, agents say the driver accelerated beyond the posted speed limit.
Walker, who was the rear right passenger, discharged a Smith & Wesson 40-caliber semi-automatic pistol several times out of the right window towards Cpl. West who within close proximity of the fleeing vehicle.
Another suspect in the getaway vehicle, who was the left rear passenger, also fired multiple shots at the trooper, authorities stated.
Eventually, the suspects in the vehicle were arrested. Walker provided law enforcement with a voluntary written statement, under Miranda, admitting to possessing the firearm and shooting at Cpl. West.
Law enforcement recovered the firearm Walker admitted to using as well as another firearm during the commission of the crime.
