BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–A mother and her young son lost their lives Sunday after their vehicle left the roadway and became partly submerged in water, according to Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury.
On Sunday, February 26, 2017, at 12:10 a.m., the coroner stated that a vehicle traveling east on I-26 near mile marker 188 overturned several times and went down an embankment landing in water.
The vehicle was partly submerged with two people inside. Divers from the Berkeley County Sheriff Office and the Berkeley County Rescue Squad assisted the local fire department in extricating the two victims.
Pronounced dead on the scene by Chief Deputy Coroner George Oliver were 12-year-old, Eyfinn Ruffin, of Charleston and his mother, 44-year-old, Ruth Ruffin also of Charleston.
Three others were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Both victims died from blunt force trauma, and their deaths were ruled accidental.
The 12-year-old was wearing a seatbelt.
“We could not determine if the mother was restrained,” stated Salisbury.
The accident is under investigation by the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
