Goose Creek Police Find Burned Human Remains In Backyard Barrel

The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office may have to rely on DNA to identify the human remains.

GOOSE CREEK, S.C.–Goose Creek Police are investigating a homicide after they located a charred human remains in the backyard of a home on Madeline Drive in Goose Creek.

On Monday at approximately 7:30 p.m., GCPD officers were dispatched to the location to check on the welfare of a resident.  Officers were advised by the resident’s daughter that she had not heard from him in several days and that the resident was at-risk due to health reasons.

Officers forced entry to the home to verify the well-being of the resident.  During the inspection of the residence and premises, an officer discovered burned human remains in a barrel in the backyard.

“The body was burnt beyond recognition,” stated Deputy Coroner George Oliver. “An autopsy will be conducted on Wednesday to help determine the cause of death and identify the body. We may have to use DNA to make a positive identification.”

GCPD investigators are treating the case as a homicide and coordinating ongoing investigative efforts with the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office.

“We will provide updates as significant progress in the case necessitates,” stated Major John Grainger with the Goose Creek Police Department.
