BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–According to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a shooting involving a retired Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office deputy in the Ridgeville area of Berkeley County.
“Due to the involvement of a retired deputy, we have asked SLED to handle this case for us,” stated Chief Deputy Mike Cochran.
SLED spokesman Thom Berry says the incident occurred at a home on Poplar Hill Drive before 8 a.m. on Wednesday.
Berry said the former deputy shot a 16-year-old intruder in the leg after finding the person in his home.
The teen was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
No charges have been filed against the former deputy, however, SLED continues to investigate the incident.
