GOOSE CREEK, S.C.–A Goose Creek man has been charged with grand larceny following the disappearance of his roommate Michael Mullikin.

After responding to a welfare check on February 27th, police discovered a burned body at 469 Madeline Dr. The charred remains were found in a backyard barrel.

Shannon Maurice Smith, Jr. is accused of stealing Mullikin’s car. Mullikin, who lived at the above address, was reported missing last month.

GCPD investigators recently traveled to St. Peters, Missouri to recover Mullikin’s vehicle which was located by St. Peters Police Department officers at a local post office.

Location of crime scene on Madeline Drive.

Goose Creek police have since issued an arrest warrant 23-year-old for Shannon Maurice Smith Jr. on the charge of “Grand Larceny $10,000 or More” for the theft of the 2017 Honda Civic which belongs Mullikin.

Authorities say Smith Jr. is currently wanted in the State of North Carolina on a weapons charge that may carry a higher extradition priority than GCPD’s grand larceny charge.  The Berkeley County Solicitor’s Office is working with North Carolina authorities on this situation.

“The Berkeley County Solicitor’s Office is working with North Carolina authorities on this situation,” stated Major John Grainger with the Goose Creek Police Department.

Investigators are awaiting the results of forensic testing of samples currently at the SLED laboratory that may assist in identifying the remains from the burn barrel.

“Investigators have, to-date, interviewed numerous individuals and followed various leads.  We will not discuss the details of interviews or leads,” stated Grainger.  “Our efforts will remain on working with the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office and SLED to identify the remains from the burn barrel and identify the person(s) responsible.”
