GOOSE CREEK, S.C.–GCPD investigators say they have obtained an arrest warrant for Shannon Smith Jr., the roommate of the late Michael Mullikin, on the charge of murder. Smith remains in custody in St. Peters, Missouri, on local charges.
On February 27th, officers met with Mullikin’s daughter who told officers that Mullikin, the homeowner who lived at 469 Madeline Drive, was missing along with his motor vehicle.
While attempting to find Mullikin, officers say they located burnt human remains inside of a burn barrel in the backyard of the victim’s residence.
The identity of the remains was later identified by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division DNA as belonging to Mullikin who was last seen in his front yard on February 24, 2017.
After police obtained a search warrant, they say they located blood spatter and castoff inside the house which they say was consistent with a struggle.
A bloody fingerprint was located on a door frame inside of the home between the living room and the hallways.
A search warrant revealed that Mullikin’s wallet was located in the bedroom of a roommate identified as Shannon Smith Jr. who used the alias Marquis Owen.
Smith was eventually located with two other people in St. Peters Missouri on February 28, 2017 in possession of Mullikin’s vehicle.
Police say the persons traveling with Smith Jr. were identified as Julie Hubbard and Alexander Kehoe. Both Hubbard and Kehoe reportedly told police that Smith Jr. told them that the vehicle was his and he had leased it.
They added that Smith Jr. picked them up at the Walmart in Summerville on February 27th aroud 10:30 pm.
The victim’s daughter advised officers that two televisions and an Xbox were missing from the home.
Hubbard and Kehoe told investigators that Smith sold the TV to a man at the Econo Lodge in Summerville, police stated.
While under investigation, Smith Jr. provided his alias to authorities and admitted that the vehicle belonged to Mullikin who had allowed him to use the vehicle.
The burnt human remains along with a bloody fingerprint found inside the victim’s home was later linked to Mullikin.
GCPD investigators say they will be working with the Berkeley County Solicitor’s Office to apply for Smith’s extradition back to Berkeley County.
“This is a significant milestone in the investigation of this case; however, there remains a great deal of work for investigators to accomplish. As such, we will not discuss this case further but intend to provide future update(s) as significant developments occur,” stated Major John Grainger with GCPD.
