MONCKS CORNER, SC – Berkeley County Mosquito Abatement (BCMA) announced Thursday afternoon that they expect to begin ground spraying this week.
The warming temperatures and recent rainfall have brought an increase in mosquitoes, county authorities stated.
County leaders say Mosquito Abatement personnel have been busy inspecting standing water throughout the county and treating water where juvenile mosquitoes are found. When large numbers of adult mosquitoes are found in inspections, BCMA will begin ground ULV applications.
During mosquito season, BCMA typically sends out between 3-7 spray trucks each night and want citizens to be informed.
The best protection against mosquitoes is to limit time spent outdoors during peak biting times (i.e. the hours right around dusk and again at dawn). If you must be outdoors when mosquitoes are active, dress in light-colored, long sleeves and pants, and use an effective mosquito repellent.
Horse owners are strongly encouraged to have their horses vaccinated. Beekeepers, organic farmers, or anyone in Berkeley County with questions or concerns about mosquito control activities should contact the BCMA office at 843-719-4646.
When BCMA starts spraying by aircraft, county officials say they always give a minimum of 24 hours notice prior to the application.
