BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–More than 12 hours after a tractor trailer carrying hazardous materials overturned on I-26 near the Jedburg Road exit at mile marker 194, some lanes remain closed to traffic.
Shortly after 9 a.m. Monday, a truck carrying a hazardous cargo overturned into the median of I-26, according to Lance Cpl. Matt Southern.
Berkeley County EMS officials say the truck was carrying Para Chlorobenzoic Fluoride, a flammable liquid that goes into different types of paint.
The accident resulted in bumper to bumper traffic along the interstate.
As of 9: 30 p.m., cleanup crews continue to remove the load from the tractor trailer involved in the crash on I-26.
“Safety is the utmost importance and requires caution,” stated Lance Cpl. Matt Southern with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Lanes remain blocked at 199 MM WB. Drivers are able to exit at 199 A to Summerville and 199 B towards Goose Creek/Moncks Corner.
Southern has suggested anyone coming or leaving Charleston to take U.S. Highways 52 or 78 instead.
The driver of the 18-wheeler was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries, officials say.
