MONCKS CORNER, S.C. – The Pinopolis Lock on Lake Moultrie at Jefferies Hydroelectric Station will be out of service from Oct. 25 through Nov. 8 for planned maintenance. Once the lock reopens, winter operating hours will begin. The hours are from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., weather permitting.
As part of the outage, Santee Cooper and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources will install a new high-tech fish counter at the lock. It will be used next spring during the annual fish migration up the west branch of the Cooper River.
Several times a day during the spring, fish are allowed to enter the Tailrace Canal side of the lock where they are counted and lifted 75 feet in the lock to the level of Lake Moultrie. The lake-side lock gates then open and fish are released into the lake.
