BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Two people have died following a mobile home fire in Moncks Corner, officials stated.
According to Chief Scott Lee with the Moncks Corner Rural Fire Department, crews responded to the scene around 1:31 p.m. on Sunday to the 200-block of Midnight Drive.
Moncks Corner Fire Department, and Whitesville Rural Fire Department also assisted at the scene.
According to Lee, the fire started from supplemental heating.
An elderly couple was said to be asleep when their heating unit, attached to a propane tank, caught the cabinets to their home on fire.
E.M.S responded to the scene and attempted CPR on an elderly couple living inside the mobile home.
According to Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury with the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office, the couple died on the way to the hospital.
An autopsy is planned for Monday, Salisbury stated.
Lee says the couple appear to have died from smoke inhalation.
Salisbury is not releasing the names of the couple until the next of kin has been notified.
