BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–A man accused of stealing $60,000 of equipment from the Berkeley County School District has been captured following a chase, according to Berkeley County deputies.
Mark Eugene Weissmann, 27, of Bonneau has been charged in connection with the crime. Weissmann was currently released from jail in January of this year on bond for Burglary 2nd Degree and Receiving Stolen Goods.
Deputies say the theft occurred on Sunday at the Berkeley County School District’s Facility Services building at 2226 Old Highway 52 in Moncks Corner.
Authorities say over the weekend, the suspect used bolt cutters to cut a hole in the fence and enter the property. Once inside, he cut the locks off of two trailers and entered both. He then cut the lock off of the front gate, drove into the property and hooked up to a 18 ft. utility double axel trailer.
“The assistance from the community was key in helping solve this swiftly and we wanted to thank everyone who provided tips on this case,” Sheriff Duane Lewis stated.
Detectives say they recovered a tandem axle trailer at an address off Bennett Avenue in Saint Stephen. While on scene, the suspect returned in the truck seen on surveillance footage and stopped a short distance away and fled on foot. Detectives, along with Uniform Patrol and K9 established a perimeter and the suspect, identified as Mark Eugene Weissmann was apprehended without incident.
It was determined that the truck had been stolen days prior in Charleston County from a construction site.
The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office still needs the public’s assistance in trying to locate one of the John Deer 6200/7200 Zero Turn mowers, one has been recovered but one is still missing.

1. Trailer
2. 2 backpack blowers
3. 2 Edgers
