MONCKS CORNER, S.C.–More than a decade after two Moncks Corner police officers lost their lives in the line of duty, a monument now pays tribute to their bravery and for making the ultimate sacrifice.
Corporal Marcus Stiles, 26, and Officer Lonnie Wells, 40, were killed while responding to a 9-1-1 domestic disturbance on March 25, 2007.
Authorities say the suspect, Gary Douglas, 51, opened fire on the two officers. It was a Berkeley County Sheriff’s deputy who eventually shot and killed the suspect after he fled from the scene.
On Wednesday, the Moncks Corner Police Department and the community honored the sacrifice of the two slain officers.
To honor their legacy, a memorial stone now sits by the flagpole at Moncks Corner Town Hall.
Around 50 people attended the event.
Mayor Michael Lockliear and Police Chief Rick Ollic also spoke during the memorial.
