Nexton Parkway Interchange Opens to Traffic

VIA BERKELEY COUNTY GOVERNMENT

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.– The Nexton Parkway Interchange officially opened to the public Monday at 6 a.m.

Contractors removed barriers and construction equipment so that vehicles were able to finally travel both the east and westbound lanes.

A few days prior to the official opening, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held.

The interchange connects the Nexton Parkway in Berkeley County to Summerville.

The entire project consisted of constructing a new interchange on I-26 just west of Sheep Island Road. In addition, I-26 was widened from four to six lanes from mile marker 199 to mile marker 197 (approximately 2500-ft. west of the new interchange).

The cost to construct the interchange is estimated to be around $88 million. Berkeley County is the project owner, funding nearly $55 million. The SC State Ports Authority is funding $8 million, South Carolina Transportation Infrastructure Bank is funding nearly $22 million, and the Town of Summerville is funding $4 million.

A portion of the project was opened April 5, which included frontage roads, from Holiday Drive and Business Park Road, as well as Maple Street extension toward Highway 78.

“This incredible and much-needed interchange is one worth celebrating,” said Berkeley County Supervisor Bill Peagler. “Berkeley County turned a necessary road project, that was ignored prior to my administration, and expedited the work to ensure the public’s needs are met. The project sat still for nearly a decade, but I’m happy to announce its completion and celebrate the hard work of the dedicated crews involved.”
