Deputies: 2 People Charged with Stealing Money, Passport from Chinese Couple

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office recently arrested two suspects for the theft of a bag containing a Chinese passport and other valuables belonging to a Chinese tourist that occurred on June 19th at the 1520 North Main Street McDonalds in the Summerville area of the county.

On 06-19-2018 two Chinese tourists had stopped for a meal at McDonald’s in the Summerville area of Berkeley County, just getting a bite to eat on their way to New York, when the man accidentally left his bag behind containing his passport and money. The couple that was eating sitting next to them saw the bag, took it, and left the restaurant without any attempt to locate the owners.

With input from the community, Sheriff’s detectives identified and obtained warrants for the two individuals in the photos & they were apprehended on Friday the 13th.

Arrested on warrants for Petit Larceny with Enhancement were Karen Whack, age 61, (aka Karen Webb or Karen Moore) and Pierre Benet Matthews, age 57, (aka Pere Benet Matthews). Whack claimed to not know anything about the case at the time of her arrest.

When she was booked, coins including a Canadian dollar, 3 Zhongguo Renmin Yinhang coins, then 2 Hong Kong coins were in a change purse inside her purse. (The victim travels between China and Canada.)

Once booked into the Hill Finklea Detention Center, they were given a $15,000 surety bond. They both remain in the Hill Finklea Detention Center.
