BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–According to Berkeley County officials, the first two weeks of tire cleanup at the former Viva Recycling facility is showing incredible progress.

Crews with Liberty Tire Recycling have cleared approximately 67 truckloads of tires from the former Viva Recycling facility in the past two weeks. Each truckload averages about 14 tons each. Berkeley County Government entered an agreement with Liberty Tire Recycling to begin the removal of tires at the former Viva Recycling plant on Monday, August 20, 2018.

A $2 million grant from the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control will pay for the cleanup. That grant is expected to cover the removal of more than 800,000 tires at the now-closed facility.

Berkeley County Council approved Liberty Tire Recycling on June 25, 2018, following requirements of a formal solicitation.

Crews with Liberty Tire Recycling are transporting the tires to plants in North Carolina and South Carolina, where they will be processed for other uses.

Weather permitting, the cleanup process is expected to be complete within 10 months of the start date.

During the cleanup process, Berkeley County Sheriff’s deputies will be patrolling the area. The public is not allowed on the premises.

Last year, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control revoked the waste tire processing permit and imposed a civil penalty of $1,647,372 against VIVA Recycling of South Carolina LLC (VIVA MC) for repeated violations at its Moncks Corner waste tire processing facility. This also forced the closure of the facility effective September 2017.
