Berkeley County to Move to OPCON 3 on Sunday

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Berkeley County’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will move to OPCON 3 at 8 a.m. Sunday, September 9, 2018.

OPCON 3 means a disaster or emergency situation is likely or imminent. Berkeley County will partially activate the EOC tomorrow morning.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency Saturday afternoon. Tropical Storm Florence is expected to strengthen into a hurricane tonight or early Sunday morning. The latest track from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is attached. South Carolina residents are encouraged to prepare for the storm now.

Berkeley County leaders have been meeting and discussing preparations for any potential impacts Tropical Storm Florence could have on South Carolina. While the path of the storm is still uncertain, it may pose a threat to Berkeley County. The County is closely monitoring the storm and will be coordinating a response if necessary. Berkeley County leaders are encouraging citizens to prepare and be proactive.

Berkeley County opened a citizens’ information line at 8 a.m. By calling 843-719-4800, residents can get updated information from the County’s Emergency Preparedness Department. Additionally, citizens can report issues the County should be made aware of.

Berkeley County will continue to update the County website, Facebook and Twitter pages as new information comes in.
