BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Hurricane Florence is now a category 3 hurricane, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). It is expected to strengthen significantly in the coming days.
To help residents prepare, sandbags are being made available to residents throughout Berkeley County.
The following fire department locations currently have sandbags available to anyone who needs them:
- Town of Moncks Corner
- Pine Ridge (Myers Rd Station)
- Lake Moultrie
- Hanahan Fire Dept (by town hall)
- Whitesville (Sunview Station)
Sand is available on a first come, first serve basis. Residents are responsible to fill them.

City of Goose Creek officials are also presently working with county officials to make sandbags available to residents in their municipality.
“We are working with Berkeley County to make sand and sandbags available for pickup later today in the area between Fire Station 1 and the Department of Public Works at 201 Button Hall Avenue in Goose Creek,” city officials posted on Facebook. “As soon as they are ready for pickup, we will announce that on this page.”

For Hanahan residents, sand and bags will be available in the following three locations starting on Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.:
- Yeamans Hall Gym (1255 Yeamans Hall Road; the intersection of Yeamans Hall Road and Robinson Street)
- Athletic Complex Field #2 (3000 Mabeline Road)
- Fire Station #2 (Otranto Neighborhood; 1200 S. Basillica Avenue)
Monday will be self-fill from 2 p.m. – 8 p.m. Shovels and bags will be available.
Berkeley County leaders expect to deliver more sand to other locations throughout the day and into the week.
Berkeley County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) began operating at OPCON 3 at 8 a.m. this Sunday. OPCON 3 means a disaster or emergency situation is likely or imminent.
