MONCKS CORNER, S.C.–Going to the store late on New Year’s Day was the last thing a Moncks Corner man felt like doing, but he says he had a feeling he should get up and go buy a Mega Millions® ticket. He’s glad he did.
The next morning, he opened his newspaper to the lottery results and realized the ticket he almost didn’t buy won him $1 MILLION.
“Am I still asleep?” he wondered.
He called his wife over and the two took turns calling out the winning numbers for the Mega Millions® drawing on Tuesday, January 1. The first five numbers quick picked on their ticket were a perfect match (34, 44, 57, 62, 70 and MB: 14).
“I called the Lottery next,” he said, and the results were the same.
“I was surprised when he left the house to go buy a ticket,” the winner’s wife told lottery officials yesterday. “It still hasn’t sunk in.”
The ticket overcame odds of 1 in 12.6 million to win $1 million.
Had the millionaire spent the extra $1 for the Megaplier, his prize would have been multiplied four times to $4 million.
“I’m fine with $1 million,” his wife said.
“I’m spending the extra $1 next time,” he said.
For selling the claimed ticket, Circle K #2723880 in Moncks Corner received a commission of $10,000.
The Mega Millions® jackpot for tonight’s drawing is an estimated $40 million.
Good luck, South Carolina!
