MONCKS CORNER, S.C.–Berkeley County Water and Sanitation officials say they are working closely with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) to find a solution to the odor coming from the Berkeley County landfill located on Highway 52.
Berkeley County received more than 11 inches of rain in December 2018, and several more inches into January 2019. Officials say this has caused some odor issues at the landfill, due to moisture and the breakdown of gypsum board.
This results in the release of Hydrogen Sulfide gas and puts off a “rotten egg” smell.
Berkeley County leaders say they are taking extra measures to find a solution to the problem.
Consultants have been brought in to conduct onsite sampling to help locate the source of Hydrogen Sulfide. Crews are using multiple coverage methods to contain the odor.
“The county will continue to use every resource necessary to solve the problem,” read a statement in a news release. “Berkeley County will continue to provide updates on this issue as new information comes out.”
